January 28, 2008

Work in the garage.
Our top floor is supported by engineered joists and laminated beams from Swift Supply in Orange Beach. A very wide piece of lumber is attached to the inside perimeter of the DAC-ART walls. Large stainless steel blots are epoxyed into the concrete walls and go thru the wood bands. Metal joist hangers are attached to the wood band and the joists are dropped into them from above. People always ask how one puts interior floors in a DAC-ART concrete block home.

The interior walls are being built by Dan Zehentner's carpentry crew. It is exciting to see the rooms taking shape.

The garage is a large one car garage. The ceiling in it is quite tall. The lighting will be sconces that go on the electric boxes visible about 2/3 way up the walls.   Good to see these exterior walls going up as smoothly as they have.

The guestroom has windows and a French door out to a nice porch. Behind it is the roomy foyer which has stairs going down to the garage.

Tomorrow the plan is to lay the subfloor, so my next photos will show the ultimate view...hopefully of the Gulf !

Well , it turned out to be a beautiful day couple days later, Sat. Feb. 2.

Long G-P engineered floor joists from Swift Supply for the second (top)  floor.

The interior of the garage just before the top floor decking went on.

Decking was passed in the front door opening and up to the crew on the second floor.

Temporary stairs were built inside from first floor to the second floor. The actual stairs will have a landing and extend out into the foyer a bit further.

Looking north from the top floor. The living room, kitchen and master bedroom are on this floor. It will be the primary floor for living.

The position of the interior walls were chalked off to assist with block placement. One must consider where one's grout lines fall so you have max strength in your wall to bolt the interior structures to.

This will be the view from the top floor. Another porch will go on top of the lower porch that you see below.

Two rows of blocks have been stacked for the front staircase.

Blocks are in place for rapid Dac-Art block stacking next week. Our decorative panels for the second floor may be delivered next week too. That will be quite exciting. Dac-Art can be created with elaborately detailed faces to add a real old world elegance to your project.
