Concrete Back-Fill ...First Pour

first course of concrete stone blocks first back-fill cement truck delivery
Sept 29-2007--Dan, the general contractor, had considered using a concrete bucket and the crane to pour the back-fill concrete into the cavities of the DAC-ART blocks. He decided that it would be way too messy, so he had a concrete pump truck come over from Mobile. The long arm of the concrete pump truck was amazing and Mike was able to accomplish the backfill job with no mess.

The rebar that runs thru the middle of the cavity in the DAC-ART blocks extends out the top of this first row of blocks. The loops are the handles on the blocks that are used to lift and place the blocks.

We have had day after day of unbelievably gorgeous weather. Not too hot and plenty of sun. The crew is being very good about minimizing the amount of grass lost and dust created.
columns for porch slab support waterfront porch back-fill area under slab
This area is the waterfront porch off the guest bedroom. The whole thing you see here with dirt still init will get backfilled with sand and a slab is going to be poured on top. Two cardboard cylinders were placed in the center of the area under where the slab will be to provide additional support. They are on footings and were filled with concrete also.

You can see the rebar that was added to run up thru the next rows of blocks. Also visible is the end of the thick slab that runs under the above ground basement. There is one row of blocks on the basement slab now and two rows forming the porch walls. The porch will be up on 5 rows of blocks so it will be quite high off the ground compared to the porch on the original structure. French doors will open off the guest room onto the porch.
